When you combine 18 strings, two guitar necks, and the hands and head of a drummer, guitarist, bassist, pianist and composer into one package, the results are captivating.
New Hampshire native Ian Ethan Case began studying and composing on piano at age five, and expanded his study over the next several years to include drumset, saxophone, electric bass, and guitar. His self-produced debut CD Ascendant (2002) consisted of 11 original instrumental compositions wherein the 20-year-old played all five instruments, achieving a full-“band” sound through multi-track overdubbing.
After studying jazz theory, arranging, and sound engineering at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Case discovered the double neck acoustic guitar as a natural vehicle for sharing his multi-layered compositions in a live solo setting. Case's sound comes from a wide variety of highly-original playing techniques that take full advantage of 18 strings, two fretboards, and his experience as a multi-instrumentalist and composer.
Solo pieces such as “Into Open Land” and “Fourth Corner” have delighted audiences in a variety of venues including the Middle East club and Club Passim in Boston, Brewed Awakenings and Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids Minnesota, Principia College in Elsah Illinois, the Middle Earth Music Hall in Bradford, VT, Nectar's in Burlington VT, Boston University, the Riddle Tavern in Merrimack, NH, and the Dream Farm concert series in Hollis, NH to name a few. Case also performed with KOSA founder/director and internationally-recognized Montreal percussionist Aldo Mazza to open the KOSA 2006 Music Festival in Johnson, Vermont. With a new album in the works, Case continues to gain the support of a growing number of venues and listeners as he launches into new musical territory with the double neck acoustic guitar.
